Manners of discourse - Quran Chapter 12 – 96 to 98 (Pt-13, Stg-3) (L-1542) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 12  96 to 98 (Pt-13, Stg-3) (L-1542) - درس قرآن

Manners of discourse

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) - 12

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

Brothers of Joseph (peace be upon him) misbehaved with him and Binyamin. They both were younger than all other brothers. But Allah Almighty bestowed honour to Joseph (peace be upon him), his brothers stood before him being abashed and ashamed. In these verses, way of talking with elders has been taught. The brothers were repentant and desirous that they should ask forgiveness from Joseph for themselves. But Joseph (peace be upon him) regarded them because they were elders. Only these words came out by their tongue “Allah has created you fortunate and we were sinful without any doubt”. But Joseph (peace be upon him) did not provide them chance of saying more and said immediately, “Have no fear this day! May Allah forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy”.

From this discussion, it appears that Joseph (peace be upon him) was well-acquainted with business. He (peace be upon him) regarded His brothers in two forms:

1.   He (peace be upon him) did not provide them opportunity to say “Forgive our error”, because in it, there was a lightness of them.

2.   Even He (peace be upon him) did not say to them “I forgave you”, because saying this by a younger; does not suit.

We can learn from it that the younger should say at once “I have no complaint against you”, as soon as he feels that the elder is abashed and repentant due to his error in any matter.

After that, when the sons reached their father with good news, they declared before him (peace be upon him) that they were repentant, but they could not say by their tongue “Forgive our error”, because it was not an ordinary mistake. They requested only this “O our father! Ask forgiveness of our sins for us, for lo! We were sinful”. When Jacob (peace be upon him) felt their repentance, He consoled them and said: I shall ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Lo! He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.

There is an indication in this reply of Jacob (peace be upon him), “Your sin is so much great that it can be forgiven by Allah Almighty only”, and a point of reproof exists also in this signal; which can be done by the elder to his younger. It has been shown from the replies of Jacob and Joseph (peace be upon them) that “We forgave you”. But in their ways of talking, those manners were contemplated which are regard-able among the elders and the youngers.
