Surah ‘Ibraahiim (Abraham) - 14

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

45.  And (have ye not) dwelt in the dwellings of those who wronged themselves (of old) and (hath it not) become plain to you how We dealt with them and made examples for you?

46.  And verily they have plotted their plots, and their all plot is with Allah, though their plots were such whereby the mountains should be moved.

Commentary

It will be commanded on the Day of Resurrection: While you had all facilities to work in the world and you were informed properly that you should consider this opportunity (of life) sufficient, and produce a habit in yourselves to obey the commandments of Allah Almighty and follow the Sayings of Messengers (peace be upon them). The time was available for you to reflect in the circumstances of ancient people and take a warning from them. You were well aware that how severely We (God Almighty) punished them due to their evil deeds. Moreover, We had stated their condition before you in detail. They had devised big plans to complete them but in vain before Allah Almighty. Weak plots of an ignorant mankind cannot be as; whereby the mountains should be moved.

Commentary

Mankind becomes proud on his bodily health, physical strength and wealth, and instead of keeping his wishes in control, he considers that collecting goods for fulfilling own  desires is the best hobby. But his Creator and Lord Almighty fixes it a devilish temptation and says to His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): Warn these people and say to them: If you are entangled continuously in the same ridiculous thoughts, then on one or other day misfortune will surround you. At that time you will cry out helplessly that “Our Lord! Indeed we were deceived. Reprieve us for a little while. We promise that we shall obey Your commandments and follow Your Messengers (peace be upon them) wholeheartedly in future”.

Then it will be commanded: you have been reprieved very much. But you were so much lustful in worldly merriments that you forgot your death. Whenever you spoke, you said: No one can snatch this prosperity from us. Who can defeat us?

42.  And deem not that Allah is Unaware of what the wicked do. He but giveth them a respite till a Day when eyes will stare (in terror)-

43.  As they come hurrying on in fear; their heads upraised, their gaze returning not to them, and their hearts void (with terror).
42.  Wa  laa  tahsaban-nAllaaha  gaafilan  ‘ammaa  ya’-maluz-zaali-muun.  ‘Innamaa  yu-‘akh-khiruhum  li-Yawmin  tash-khasu  fiihil-‘absaar.

43.  Muhti-‘iina  muqni-‘ii  ru-‘uusihim  laa  yartaddu  ‘ilay-him  tar-fuhum.  Wa  ‘af-‘idatu-hum  hawaaa’.

Commentary

Tash-khasu – (will gaze), it aims that on the Day of Resurrection, the eyes of the wicked people will stare, which will not be able to be closed.

Muhti-‘iina – (their running condition), it is the plural subject from the word ‘ah-taa-‘un, which has been derived from ha-ta-‘a. Ha-ta-‘a means “running fast”. ‘Ah-taa-‘un means “running fast in terror”.

Muqni-‘ii – (upraised), actually this word is muqni-‘iin. However, due to annexing, the last “n” has been removed. It has come out from qana-‘a. qanuu’ means “to rise up”. ‘Iqnaa’ means “to raise up”.

It is commanded that the disbelievers of Allah Almighty should consider thoughtfully that they have been given a respite in the world, so that they should know their Lord and turn towards Him. Their condition, on the Day of Resurrection, will be such that they will come hurrying on in fear. Their heads will be upraised. Their eyes will remain staring continuously, which will not be able to be closed or turned to down, right or left. Their hearts will be uneasy with terror.

Commentary

Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) expresses gratitude on previous favors of Allah Almighty. He says: It is bestowal of Allah Almighty that while I was an old man, He gave me two sons, Ishmael and Isaac (peace be upon them). He deserves thankfulness and praise. Therefore, I say sincerely that the Owner of excellences and good attributes is only Allah Almighty. The person who said “’Al-Hamdu-Lillaah” by his tongue remembering His favors, he thanked for that favor, and his name will be registered in the list of those who thanked God Almighty. Then after remembering the unusual favor, he (peace be upon him) asks more favors by this means.

He (peace be upon him) prays: Our Lord! While You gave the Bounty as much that it cannot be reckoned, so; make Your servant (me) able to establish prayers according to the times prescribed by You, and like this, make also some people of my posterity who should continue establishing worship timely. O Lord of our all! Forgive sins of me, my parents and all Believers, and disgrace us not due to our sins on the Day of Reckoning i.e. the Day of Resurrection.

Commentary

Messenger Abraham (peace be upon him) is busy in supplications before The Lord. He remembered his Lord’s (Allah’s) those particular favors which He graced upon him (peace be upon him). He (peace be upon him) remembers them and says: If I do not pray from You then from whom I should? Certainly; You hear the prayers and fulfill requirements of the people. I had been old and did not have any child. I prayed from You that I should not be left childless. You heard my supplication and during my old age, You gave – not only one but two sons, named Ishmael and Isaac (peace be upon them).

Then there was no doubt that indeed You hear prayers of Your servants and grant them. Therefore, I have produced myself in Your Court, and pray to make this township blessed. Land of this region does not produce any crop. While irrespective of apparent causes, You bestowed son like Isaac (peace be upon him) to me, the old man, whose wife is also old, then it is not difficult for You to provide fruits for food of inhabitants of this barren and droughty land, and guide them to be thankful to You.

It seems after reciting these prayers of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) that it is also one elegance out of prayer’s respects that by remembering previous favors, one should be thankful, and having regard for those kindness, one should ask about more favors.

Commentary

Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) was representing recently (in the previous verse) before Allah Almighty that He (peace be upon him) brought His son and wife; and colonized them in barren jungle near His house Ka’-bah. He (peace be upon him) liked nearness of “The Square Building” (Ka’-bah) because by this, it would be easy for them to establish the custom of regular worship.

He (peace be upon him) prayed: O Allah! Incline the hearts of some people that they may yearn toward my people, provide them with abundant fruits and guide them so that they may be Your thankful servants. Then, Abraham (peace be upon him) supplicated earnestly: I am not repeating these applications before You for the purpose that You don’t know. Reason of my prayer is that I should remember Your favors and honors.

After that Abraham (peace be upon him) entreated more: it is greatest blessing on me that You bestowed me dignity of admitting at Your Court. You know more than me the same matters. But You have been hearing attentively the supplications of mankind for their desire of pleasing. You are well Aware of secrets which we hide and matters which we proclaim. Not only this, but nothing is hidden from You (Allah Almighty); whether that is in the heaven or in the earth. It is only a form of granting taste of prayers to Your servants, which You have given to them with Your countless Bounty.

Commentary

By the Commandment of Allah Almighty, Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) carried his son Ishmael (peace be upon him) along with his mother Hajrah (May Allah be pleased with her) unto Faran Valley and left them in a barren field. At that time, He (peace be upon him) made mention of that incident before Allah Almighty in his supplication and said: Our Lord! I had left behind my wife and son in desert area at that place which was near to Your Sacred House Ka’-bah (The Square Building), for the purpose that they should promote Your Holy Name at the Sacred Place and establish the order of offering prayers for You. Our Lord! Incline the hearts of some people unto them and arrange to provide them fruits for food, so that they may be Your thankful servants.

Abraham (peace be upon him) used to come at that place from Syria again and again for knowing about the condition of the members of His family. He (peace be upon him) saw that Allah Almighty has caused to spring up a Fountain of water named Zamzam, Tribe of Jarham has reached and inhabited there. Ishmael (peace be upon him) has been married among them. Ka’-bah, which they both had constructed collectively; has become a Place of Pilgrimage for the mankind. Fruits of all kinds reach there from all around in abundance.

Commentary

When at the last time, Messenger Abraham (peace be upon him) came to City of Makkah to see his son Prophet Ishmael (peace be upon him), where during his previous visit, Father and Son (both) (peace be upon them) built Ka’-bah (The House of God at Makkah), then Abraham (peace be upon him) prayed: My Lord! Make safe this City and preserve me and my sons from serving idols.

During the early age, Abraham (peace be upon him) came in the grip of idol-worshipping in His native country, particularly at His home. He (peace be upon him) passed many years opposing and facing idolaters. At last, He (peace be upon him) flew from His native land Iraq under compulsion to Syria. He (peace be upon him) describes about the same bitter experience in His supplication and says: O Allah! I have seen that how much these idols have led many people astray from the Straight Path. These idols do not have any power, but their worshippers have beguiled in such a way that many good people are entangled in the misfortune of idol-worshipping. O our Lord! Save us from it. I have warned my children radically and caused to understand My descendants that “If you will follow Me then you are of Me, otherwise “unto you your religion and unto me my religion”.

My Lord! Those are not of me who turned away from my Path, they went astray. Now there affair is with You. You are Sovereign and Lord of all of them. Your Attribute is Forgiving, Merciful.

Commentary

The Quraish of Makkah used to say: idol-worship is religion of our forefathers. By the fortune of it, we are masters of Ka’-bah (The Square Building, The House of Allah at Makkah). In this verse, it has been exposed to view their such plea, and it is commanded: In fact, you are children of Abraham (peace be upon him). He brought his son Ishmael (peace be upon them) along with his mother “Agar (Hajra – May Allah be pleased with her), settled them in the wilderness of Arab and returned. Allah Almighty caused to spring up a fountain of water named “Zamzam” in that wilderness. One tribe of Arab named Jirham was passing through that place. Meanwhile, they saw abundant water and began to live there. In short, Allah Almighty arranged for living of Ishmael (peace be upon him) and his mother (May Allah be pleased with her) and they were provided all necessary goods.

In this Section, it is being informed to the Quraish: Your most glorious grandfather Abraham (peace be upon him) departed supplicating for you: “My Lord! Make safe this City and preserve me and my sons from serving idols”. Listen to his last prayer and be ashamed that you are children of such person, who believed in one God and who was His chosen Servant. Even then you are worshippers of idols.

During his entire worldly life, he (peace be upon him) did not turn his attention to any other save Allah Almighty. It was the reason that he was called Haniif (The Upright) and he was not of the idolaters. His fortunate descendants are only those people who saved themselves from serving idols. You people, being His children, worship idols. It means that you are His undutiful successors. When at the last time He met His son Ishmael (peace be upon him), His first supplication was: My Lord! Make this City a place of peace and safety; and as You preserved me by Your mercy from serving idols, save also my children from this misfortune.

Countless Bounty of Allah Almighty

Surah ‘Ibraahiim (Abraham) - 14

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

34.  And He giveth you of all ye ask of Him. And if ye would count the Bounty of Allah ye cannot reckon it. Lo! Man is verily a wrongdoer, an ingrate.
34.  Wa  ‘aataakum-min-  kulli  maa  sa-‘altumuuh.  Wa  ‘in  ta-‘udduu  ni’-ma-tAllaahi  laa  tuh-suuhaa.  ‘Innal-‘insaana  la-za-luu-mun-  Kaffaar.

Commentary

Laa  tuh-suu – (you cannot reckon entire), it is negative sentence from the word ‘ih-saa-‘un. Actually this word is laa  tuh-suuna. Due to use of the word “’in”, the last “na” has been dropped. Origin of the word ‘ih-saa-‘un is ha-sa-ya. ‘Ih-saa-‘un means “to reckon the whole”. It aims: the Bounty of Allah Almighty on the mankind is as much that if they try to count them, they will never be able to count it full.

Za-luu-mun-  Kaffaar – (a wrongdoer, an ingrate), both are tenses of exaggerating. The first word is from zulm, which means violence, injustice and oppression. The second word is from kufr, which means ingrate, ungrateful, infidelity, disbelief etc.

A Muslim considers that every thing is given by Allah Almighty, whereas any non-Muslim does never think about God, The Most High. He considers that some things are result of his own efforts and some are kindness of someone else. Islam teaches that his efforts are nothing. There are many forms of asking only. One person is that who works corporeal hard for earning with effect from morning to evening. The other is that who serves someone else. Another person is who uses his mental power to invent any new thing.

In short, all people have engaged themselves in different works. In fact, these entire human beings have been asking of Him (Allah Almighty). Every mankind, even every thing has been spreading their hands before Him for asking of His support according to their own different ways. And He gives everyone on the basis of one’s capability or Own policy, as much as He desires. The people do wrong that they do not remember Him. They consider that source of their income is own labor or kindness of any else. It is the result that they do never thank Him Who is Provider actually.
