Chapter “’Ankabuut”- (The Spider) - 29

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahiminash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

 (I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ فَإِذَآ أُوذِىَ فِى ٱللَّهِ جَعَلَ فِتْنَةَ ٱلنَّاسِ كَعَذَابِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَئِن جَآءَ نَصْرٌ مِّن رَّبِّكَ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّا كُنَّا مَعَكُمْ 10a 

10a.  And of mankind is he who saith: We believe in Allah, but, if he be made to suffer for the sake of Allah, he mistaketh the persecution of mankind for Allah’s punishment; and then, if victory cometh from thy Lord, will say: Lo! We were with you (all the while).

10a.  Wa  minan-naasi  many-yaquulu  ‘aamannaa  Billaahi  fa-‘izaaa  ‘uuziya  Fillaahi  ja-‘ala  fitnatan-naasi  ka-‘AzaaBillaah.  Wa  la-‘in  jaaa-‘a  nasrum-mir-Rabbika  laya-quulunna  ‘innaa  kunnaa  ma-‘akum.

Commentary

Fitnatun – (test, examination), here it aims “trouble, pain, sorrow, torture, calamity, distress”. Fitnatan-naasi – (that pain and calamity which one receives from the people).

In this verse, there is mention concerning those people who did not believe wholeheartedly and turned towards that side where they saw their benefit. It is commanded: Some are such people who say by their tongues that they believe in Allaah Almighty. But where the Disbelievers overawed, they changed immediately and began to follow them. They consider that teasing by the people and Torment of Allaah Almighty are equal. When they believed, the Disbelievers troubled them. Then they were confused and turned from their belief. They were ignorant who did not know that due to turning from belief; Allaah Almighty would punish them very severely, contrary to which; worldly afflictions given by the Disbelievers; due to their Belief; are just like nothing. But along with it; they do not forfeit their friendship also with the Muslims openly. Apparently they keep themselves separate from the Muslims due to fear of the Disbelievers, but when the Muslims obtain a victory by the Grace and Help of Allaah Almighty, then they come forthwith for getting their share from the Booty and begin to flatter and say: We are also Muslims and your companions. We were never separate from you. We harassed the enemies so much that they will remember it.
