The Doubts

Chapter Hajj” – (The Pilgrimage) - 22

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

52.  Never sent We a Messenger or a Prophet before thee but when He recited (the message) Satan proposed (opposition) in respect of that which he recited thereof. Then Allah abolisheth that which Satan proposeth. Then Allah establisheth His Revelations. And Allah is Knower, Wise-

Commentary

Taman-naaa – (recited, said, described), it is past tense from the word tamannii, origin of which is ma-na-ya. Mun-yatun means “the explained matter”.

‘Umniyyatun – (description, that which was recited), actually this word was ‘umnuu-yatun, but after changing of vowels, it became ‘umniyyatun, (the source or means by which any matter is disclosed).

Satan is he who misleads the mankind from the right path and his biggest trick is that he creates doubts in the words of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessing and peace be upon them) and which He causes to hear from the verses of Holy Qur’an. And Iblis changes the meanings of the verses. Many people are taken in his trick and begin to say “verily the aim may be as he says”.

Allaah Almighty manifests the meanings clearly upon the Messenger (grace, glory, blessing and peace be upon them) by means of secret Inspiration or some other Revelations. And the doubts created by Satan disappear. Allaah Almighty has full knowledge concerning the entire universe and the circumstances of the mankind and He is well Aware of the suitableness of every matter. He, according to His Knowledge and Sagacity, has revealed such verses also which may have many meanings. Those are called “Mutashaabi-haat” (Similar Verses). And He has sent down such Revelations too, which have only clear meaning. Those are called “Muhkamaat” (Clear Verses). Or if even then there is any confusion in the meanings of Holy Qur’an, then the Messenger (grace, glory, blessing and peace be upon them) is caused to understand clear meanings by confidential inspiration. And he (grace, glory, blessing and peace be upon them) explains it by means of Hadith (Saying). It is found that the meanings of Mutashaabi-haat should be searched in the light of Muhkamaat. And no one is allowed to invent the meanings of the verses of Holy Qur’an oneself.
