Chapter “’Al-‘Ahzaab” - (The Clans) - 33

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

 يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ ٱتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ وَٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا 1  وَٱتَّبِعْ مَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرًا  2  وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ وَكِيلًا 3  

                                       

1.  O Prophet! Keep thy duty to Allah and obey not the Disbelievers and the Hypocrites. Lo! Allah is Knower, Wise - 2.  And follow that which is inspired in thee from thy Lord. Lo! Allah is Aware of what ye do - 3.  And put thy trust in Allah. And Allah is Sufficient as Protector.

1.  Yaaa-‘ayyuhan-Nabiy-yuttaQillaaha  wa  laa  tuti-‘il-kaafiriina  wal-Munaafiqiin.  ‘InnAllaaha  kaana  ‘Aliiman  Hakiimaa. 2.  Wattabi’-  maa  yuuhaaa  ‘ilayka  mir-Rabbik.  ‘InnAllaaha  kaana  bimaa  ta’-maluuna  Khabiiraa. 3.  Wa  tawakkal  ‘alAllaah.  Wa  kafaa  Billaahi  Wakiilaa.

Commentary

The verses mentioned in the beginning of this Chapter are foundation of those manners which Islam desires to teach. Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) was inclined to the same habits naturally. Holy Qur’an supported them and described clearly about their reasons.

It is commanded: Your behavior is right. You should seek pleasure only of Allaah Almighty and fear from only His displeasure. You should not obey the Disbelievers and the Hypocrites, because they are ignorant and careless. Allaah Almighty knows everything and is Aware of the entire advisabilities. You should follow those Commandments which are revealed towards you. Allaah Almighty is very Watchful of your work and conduct. He has Divine Power, so you should believe and have trust in only Him. Having trust in any other than Him is useless while He has full knowledge of everything and power over the entire. He is quite Sufficient to complete your every work and as Disposer of all affairs.

Introduction of 33^rd Chapter

Chapter “’Al-‘Ahzaab” - (The Clans) - 33

In accordance with the arranged order, this is 33^rd Chapter of Holy Qur’an, which was revealed in Madinah during 5^th to 7^th year of Hijrah. The name of this Chapter is Suratul-‘Ahzaab, which contains nine Sections. The events of that Battle has been discussed in this Chapter which is called “The Battle of The Clans”. It is named “The Battle of Ditch” also because the Infidels assembled and attacked on Madinah collectively. Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) commanded to dig a trench for safety on that side of Madinah, from which there was fear of attack by the Infidels of Makkah. It happened that a Jewish tribe of Madinah, named Banu Naziir was banished from Madinah because they opposed the Treaty. At first, some people of them went to Idolaters of Makkah, met with the Chieftains of Nomad Tribe of Ghatfaan (a great Bedouin Tribe of Makkah) and excited them that they all should attack on Madinah collectively. They said also: We shall help you. Consequently, entire Tribes of Qureysh and Ghatfaan attacked on Madinah collectively. Those were nearly twelve thousand men who assaulted with the intention to destroy Madinah.

On advice of Salman Persian (May Allaah be pleased with him), the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) dug a Ditch along with his Companions (May Allaah be pleased with them) around Madinah, came out from the Township and an Army of three thousand Muslims was gathered at a bank of the Ditch. At other bank of the Ditch, the Infidels halted and between the both Armies, there was the Ditch. The Infidels shooted arrows for one month continually on the Muslims. The Muslims were afraid that they would attack at any time suddenly.

On other side, another Tribe of Jews, named Banu Qurayzah broke their Treaty with Muslims and joined the Infidels, who could attack on Madinah from behind, but they were waiting that when they would observe signs of Infidels’ victory, then they also would attack from other side. Then the Muslims had to toil double for safety of their houses too.

Apparently that was very tough time on the Muslims, but Allaah Almighty helped them. A severe and cool wind came from the Sea side and it became difficult for the Infidels to stay. At first, the people of Qureysh were confused and turned away on advice of Abu Sufiyan, then the people of Ghatfaan followed them and the Muslims felt themselves easy. After being contented from this perplexity, the Muslims besieged the Tribe of Banu Qurayzah immediately. After twenty five days, they admitted their defeat. The Chieftain of the Tribe of Banu Aws, named Sa’d son of Ma’aaz (May Allaah be pleased with him) was appointed to decide that how should be behaved with Banu Qurayzah.

He (May Allaah be pleased with him) judged: Men of Banu Qurayzah should be slain, their women and children should be made prisoners, their wealth and goods should be distributed among the Muslims.

Moreover, there are Commandments in the Chapter about adopted children, care for Muslim women when they go out of their homes, veil and other precious advices.

Chapter “SAJDAH” - (THE PROSTRATION) - 32

It has been proclaimed emphatically in this Chapter that Holy Qur’an is not any such Scripture which would have been written by any mankind. Allaah Almighty has sent it down for the guidance of human beings. The people who have doubt in it, they did not have acquaintance concerning Allaah Almighty, Who created the heavens and the earth by His Divine Power and managed everything.

Entire works of the universe are performed by His Scheme and Support. He is Who created the mankind from the clay, then spread his generations by means of sperm. The mankind is a collection of body and soul. For him the law of life is separate. Body and soul, both are compulsory for him. His worldly life will go to an end by death, that is to say, his soul will be separated from his body. But after some period, these souls will join their bodies again respectively and the life of the Hereafter will be begun. For the betterment of the mankind, it is necessary that they should have knowledge concerning Allaah Almighty in this world, believe in Him and pass the life of the world in His obedience. Otherwise they will repent after death, weep on their carelessness and desire to come back again in this world so that they may show themselves good by doing good works. But their wishes will never be fulfilled, result of which will be nothing save regret and repentance.

They forgot Allaah Almighty in the world, so He will forget them in the Hereafter and they will be tormented for ever. It is the acquaintance of the Believers that when they recite the Revelations of Allaah Almighty, they bow down for prostration, hymn His Praise being humble, establish worship by forsaking their beds, and spend their wealth for helping the needy people. Such people will feel so much rest and peace on the Day of Resurrection that they would never have thought. But those will be burnt in the Fire of the Hell who disobeyed the Commands of Allaah Almighty during their worldly life.

By the afflictions of the world, the aim is to bring the mankind towards the right path, so that he may escape from the misfortunes of the Hereafter, before which, difficulties of this world are nothing.

Prophets of Allaah Almighty (peace be upon them) came in the world. The people, who denied them, were ruined. We should learn from their circumstances, otherwise there will be no form of salvation from the future calamities which certainly will come.

 تَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ أَنْعَٰمُهُمْ وَأَنفُسُهُمْ أَفَلَا يُبْصِرُونَ 27b  وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هَٰذَا ٱلْفَتْحُ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ 28  قُلْ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَتْحِ لَا يَنفَعُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ إِيمَٰنُهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يُنظَرُونَ 29  فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ وَٱنتَظِرْ إِنَّهُم مُّنتَظِرُونَ 30

                                       

27b.  whereof their cattle eat, and they themselves? Will they not then see? 28.  And they say: When cometh this judgment (of yours) if ye are truthful? 29.  Say (unto them): On the Day of the Judgment the faith of those who disbelieve (and who then will believe) will not avail them, neither will they be reprieved. 30.  So turn away from them (O Muhammad), and await (the event). Lo! they (also) are awaiting (it).

27b.  ta’-kulu  minhu  ‘an-‘aamuhum  wa  ‘anfusuhum.  ‘Afalaa  yub-siruun. (Part Three-Fourth) 28.  Wa  yaquuluuna  mataa  haa-zal-Fathu  ‘in  kuntum  saadiqiin. 29.  Qul  Yawmal-Fathi  laa  yanfa-‘ullaziina  kafaruuu  ‘ii-maanuhum  wa  laa  hum  yunzaruun. 30.  Fa-‘a’-riz  ‘anhum  wan-tazir  ‘innahum-muntaziruun.

Commentary

It is commanded that We (Allaah Almighty) lead the water to the barren land and bring forth crops from it which become food for the people, their cattle and all other living beings. Their cattle also provide things of their nourishment. Do they not have eyes by which they may see this scene and believe in Him Who arranged to provide all such things?

When it was said to them that Judgment of their deeds will be on the Day of Resurrection, then they asked: “When the Day of Resurrection will come? Fix the time of its arrival if you are truthful”. Say to them: “What is your benefit in knowing about that Hour? It is the only matter of your understanding that your eyes will be opened and then you will believe when that Day will come, but believing after looking will not be useful. Only that belief will avail you which you will have by hearing from the Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and reciting Holy Qur’an, before arrival of that Day, that is to say, in this worldly life”. Sayings of those people who question; are meaningless. You should turn away from their useless talks, wait for the Promise of Allaah Almighty and let them mind their own business. They have, in fact, been waiting for their complete destruction, which will be result of their arrogance.

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ فِيمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ 25  أَوَلَمْ يَهْدِ لَهُمْ كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّنَ ٱلْقُرُونِ يَمْشُونَ فِى مَسَٰكِنِهِمْ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍ أَفَلَا يَسْمَعُونَ 26  أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ أَنَّا نَسُوقُ ٱلْمَآءَ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ ٱلْجُرُزِ فَنُخْرِجُ بِهِۦ زَرْعًا 27a

                                       

25.  Lo! thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that wherein they used to differ. 26.  Is it not a guidance for them (to observe) how many generations We destroyed before them, amid whose dwelling places they do walk? Lo! therein verily are Portents! Will they not then heed? 27a.  Have they not seen how We lead the water to the barren land therewith bring forth crops -

25.  Inna  Rabbaka  Huwa  yafsilu  baynahum  Yawmal-Qiyaamati  fiimaa  kaanuu  fiihi  yakhtalifuun. 26.  ‘Awa-lam  yahdi  lahum  kam  ‘ahlakNaa  min  qablihim-minal-quruuni  yamshuuna  fii  masaa-kinihim.  ‘Inna  fii  zaalika  la-‘Aayaat.  ‘Afalaa  yasma-‘uun. 27a.  ‘Awa-lam  yaraw  ‘anNaa  Nasuuqul-maaa-‘a  ‘ilal-‘arzil-juruzi  faNukhriju  bihii  zar-‘an -

Commentary

It is commanded that the people have been proceeding on their personal ways separately in the world. Every one of them says that his opinion is right and others who oppose it, are at wrong. O. K. Let them do whatever they do, whether they believe in Holy Qur’an or otherwise. You should hold it fast and abide by its Commandments. It will be judged on the Day of Resurrection that who was true and who was a liar. However, certainly such Portents exist in the world by which, if they wish, can get guidance.

They should think that where those ancient people have gone who used to dwell here and in whose dwellings these people walk and live. They cannot understand this little matter that We destroyed them due to their evil deeds. By observing their ruins, they can take warning. Do they not have ears that they may hear these Sayings? Moreover, they should observe that We have arranged to provide water in dry and withered land. By the help of water, the land produces food for them and for their cattle in abundance.

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

 وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَٰبَ فَلَا تَكُن فِى مِرْيَةٍ مِّن لِّقَآئِهِۦ وَجَعَلْنَٰهُ هُدًى لِّبَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ 23  وَجَعَلْنَا مِنْهُمْ أَئِمَّةً يَهْدُونَ بِأَمْرِنَا لَمَّا صَبَرُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا يُوقِنُونَ 24  

                                       

23.  And We verily gave Moses the Scripture; so be not ye in doubt of his receiving it; and We made it a guidance for the Children of Israel. 24.  And when they became steadfast and believed firmly in Our Revelations, We appointed from among them leaders who guided by Our Command.

23.  Wa  laqad  ‘aatayNaa  muusal-Kitaaba  falaa  takun  fii  miryatim-mil-liqaaa-‘ihii  wa  ja-‘alNaahu  hudal-li-Baniii-  ‘Israaa-‘iil. 24.  Wa  ja-‘alNaa  minhum  ‘A-‘immatany-yahduuna  bi-‘Amri-Naa  lammaa  sabaruu.  Wa  kaanuu  bi-‘AayaatiNaa  yuu-qinuun.

Commentary

Miryatun – (doubt), origin of this word is mar-yun, actual meaning of which is “to quarrel”. Here, the aim from the word miryatun is “mental distraction and anxiety of the heart, result of which is “doubt and thought of deception”.

If someone has been speaking really the truth and advising in best way, but the people do not listen to him, then certainly he will feel sorrow. Possibly, he may think that whether he himself would not be at wrong that as he would have been considering himself true, but in fact his sayings would not have been true.

Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) presented Holy Qur’an but most of the Infidels of Makkah did not believe in it. Possibility of growing grief, sorrow in his heart and being absorbed in thought was desire of human nature due to their disbelief. Therefore, he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is being consoled that he should neither be grieved and nor have any doubt. Coming down of a true Scripture is not any rare thing. We sent down a Scripture also unto Moses (peace be upon him), by which the Children of Israel found the right path. Religious leaders and Guides were born among them who had full belief in Our Revelations and who were patient on causing troubles and injuries by their opposites. Accordingly, many people chose the right path by means of them and got success in the both worlds.

Like the same, Holy Qur’an has been revealed, by which most of the people will find guidance, and great leaders will be born by its fortune. Therefore, you should perform your duty with patience and confidence.
