Lineage of Messengers

Surah Ra-‘d (The Thunder) - 13

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)
 
Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

وَلَقَدْأَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلًا مِّن قَبْلِكَ وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا وَذُرِّيَّةً وَمَا كَانَ لِرَسُولٍ أَن يَأْتِىَ بِـَٔايَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ لِكُلِّ أَجَلٍ كِتَابٌ 38

38.  And verily We sent messengers (to mankind) before thee, and We appointed for them wives and offspring. And it was not (given) to any messenger that he should bring a portent save by Allah’s leave. For everything there is a time prescribed.

38.  Wa  laqad  ‘ar-sal-Naa  rusulam-min  qab-lika  wa  ja-‘alNaa  lahum  ‘az-waajanw-wa  zurriy-yah.  Wa  maa  kaana  li-rasuu-lin  ‘any-ya’-tiya  bi-‘Aayatin  ‘illaa  bi-‘izNillaah.  Li-kulli  ‘ajalin-  kitaab.

   

Commentary

‘Ajalin – (time, length of time), this word has passed in Suratul-‘An-‘aam. Here it aims “a length of time or its consequence (may be both meanings)”.

It has been caused to understand in this verse that nature of mankind was seeker of Messengers (peace be upon them). Therefore, Allah Almighty sent Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them) for their guidance with effect from the beginning, who used to live like other human beings. They had wives as well as children too.

It is being commanded to the people of the previous Scriptures: You know the lineage of Prophets (peace be upon them). Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is also a Messenger and Prophet of Allah Almighty. Then; why do you not believe in him (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). You should understand it that Prophet or Messenger (peace be upon him) does not come for fulfilling the demands of the people according to their will. He (peace be upon him) comes for informing about the Truth. Without permission of Allah Almighty, He (peace be upon him) himself cannot show any portent. His only duty is that He (peace be upon him) should cause to know the people of His time about the prescribed commandments of Allah Almighty. And it is fact that prescribed commandments and promises have been recorded by Allah Almighty separately for all times which have been stipulated by Him.

Decision of Qur’aan

Surah Ra-‘d (The Thunder) - 13

وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَنزَلْنَٰهُ حُكْمًا عَرَبِيًّا وَلَئِنِ ٱتَّبَعْتَ أَهْوَآءَهُم بَعْدَمَا جَآءَكَ مِنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ مَا لَكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَلِىٍّ وَلَا وَاقٍ 37

37.  And this have We revealed it, A Decisive Utterance in Arabic; and if thou shouldst follow their desires after that which hath come unto thee of knowledge, then truly wouldst thou have from Allah no protecting friend nor defender.

37.  Wa  kazaa-lika  ‘anzal-Naahu  Hukman  ‘Ara-biyyaa.  Wa  la-‘initta-ba’-ta  ‘ahwaaa-‘ahum  ba’-da  maa  jaaa-‘aka  minal-‘ilmi,  maa  laka  minAllaahi  minwwa-liyyinw-wa  laa  waaq. (Section 5)

   

Commentary

In the verse earlier before this; it was commanded that the people are less in numbers who are seekers of the Truth and the Just. Every individual sees own interest. Say to them: I have neither any interest in advantage of someone and nor I am desirous to harm any person. I invite every individual unto Allah Almighty Who is One without any partner. And I serve Him only.

It is commanded in this verse: O Our Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)! It is the Decision of Holy Qur’aan which has been caused to hear you. For passing such orders, Holy Qur’aan has been revealed unto you in Arabic language, and by means of you, unto the entire human beings of the world. Purpose of sending down it in Arabic language is that your and your nation’s language is Arabic. You are true and right because you say without partiality and favor of any one. It is incumbent on you, your nation and those who are seekers of the truth; to say unhesitatingly that which Truth has been sent down towards all of you by means of this Holy Qur’aan. Lacking in it will be cause of destruction. Even if you {O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)!} also will think about their wishes, begin to hide the Truth by showing them your favor, then neither any person can save you and nor set you free from the wrath of Allah Almighty.

Known from it is that God Almighty helps only such people who obey His commandment and they do not care own as well as others’ wishes.

وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَاتَيْنَٰهُمُ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ وَمِنَ ٱلْأَحْزَابِ مَن يُنكِرُ بَعْضَهُۥ قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ ٱللَّهَ وَلَآ أُشْرِكَ بِهِۦٓ إِلَيْهِ أَدْعُوا۟وَإِلَيْهِ مَـَٔابِ 36

36.  And those unto whom We gave the Scripture rejoice in that which is revealed unto thee, and of the clans there are who deny some of it. Say: I am commanded only that I serve Allah and ascribe unto Him no partner. Unto Him I do invite ye and unto Him is my return.

36.  Wallaziina  ‘aatay-Naa-humul-Kitaaba  yafra-huuna  bimaaa  ‘unzila  ‘ilay-ka  wa  minal-‘ahzaabi  many-yunkiru  ba’-zah.  Qul  ‘innamaaa  ‘umirtu  ‘an  ‘a’-budAllaaha  wa  laaa  ‘ushrika  biH. ‘Ilay-Hi  ‘ad-‘uu  wa  ‘ilay-Hi  ma-‘aab.

   

Commentary

When Holy Qur’aan was being revealed, at that time, some people from Makkah were already disgusted from infidelity and belief in a plurality of God. As soon as they heard the verses of Holy Qur’aan, they had been attracted. Besides them, the people of chaste disposition from the Jews and the Christians were also pleased after hearing the verses. Although some people were not ready to believe in some commandments of Holy Qur’aan, because they had been observing that their ready made game was going to be spoiled. And they used to say: If those verses were deleted from It which were against their worldly benefits then It was a good Scripture.

In this verse, it has been commanded to the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) after describing about their behavior: Right is not subject to any individual’s personal particular interest. It keeps in view the interest of the entire human beings only. You should say to them: I am commanded that I should serve purely Allah Almighty and should not ascribe any partner unto Him. I invite all of you unto Him only because only He is my Supporter and we all have to return unto Him.

مَّثَلُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ٱلَّتِى وُعِدَ ٱلْمُتَّقُونَ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ أُكُلُهَا دَآئِمٌوَظِلُّهَا تِلْكَ عُقْبَى ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوا۟ وَّعُقْبَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ ٱلنَّارُ 35

35.  A similitude of the Garden which is promised unto those who keep their duty (to Allah): Underneath it rivers flow. Its food is everlasting, and its shade. This is the reward of those who keep their duty. And the reward of disbelievers is the Fire.

35.  Masalul-Jannatil-latii  wu-‘idal-  Mutta-quun.  Tajrii  min  tah-tihal-  ‘anhaar.  ‘Ukulu-haa  daaa-‘imunw-  wa  zilluhaa.  Tilka  ‘Uqbal-lazii-natta-qaw-wa  ‘Uqbal-  kaafirii-nan-Naar.

   

Commentary

It is not easy to explain about such thing which is neither seen and nor heard by any person. Real state of the Paradise and the Hell cannot be described because; words in the languages of the entire world do not exist for this purpose.

For it, Holy Qur’aan chose those words from Arabic language which manifest the best condition in the world and then It commanded: You can set up some image of the Paradise from it. Like this, those words which disclose pain and suffering, have been chosen for explaining the condition of the Hell, so that the people may form a mental likeness of the Hell.

In this verse, there is mention about the Paradise (Garden) and the Hell which has begun with the word “A Similitude” (Masalu). The word Masalu means “similar, like, resembling, corresponding and likeness etc.”

In the world, similitudes of the Paradise are “Gardens, rivers, fresh fruit, shelter from sunlight etc. and in addition, stability of these things for ever. So these things have been adopted for explaining about the Paradise.

Like this, it has been described that the Hell is a place of Fire, utmost limit of heat and fervor. These things are considered entirely painful. So it is a conception of the Hell.

At the end, it has been commanded that the things which provide ease and comfort, will be given to the people who are abstinent; as remuneration of their belief and good works. But those who are disobedient and disbelievers; will find nothing save burning in the Fire.

أَفَمَنْ هُوَ قَآئِمٌ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ وَجَعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ شُرَكَآءَ قُلْ سَمُّوهُمْ أَمْ تُنَبِّـُٔونَهُۥ بِمَا لَا يَعْلَمُفِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَم بِظَٰهِرٍ مِّنَ ٱلْقَوْلِ بَلْ زُيِّنَ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مَكْرُهُمْ وَصُدُّوا۟ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَمَن يُضْلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِنْ هَادٍ 33

لَّهُمْ عَذَابٌ فِىٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ أَشَقُّ وَمَا لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَاقٍ 34

33c.  And he whom Allah sendeth astray, for him there is no guide. 34.  For them is torment in the life of the world, and verily the doom of the Hereafter is more painful, and they have no defender from Allah.

33c.  Wa  many-yuzli-Lillaahu  famaa  lahuu  min  haad. 34.  Lahum  ‘azaabun  fil-ha-yaa-tid-dunyaa  wa  la-‘azaabul-‘Aakhi-rati  ‘ashaqq.  Wa  maa  la-hum-minAllaahi  minw-waaq.

   

Commentary

It was commanded in the previous verse that the sign of misfortune of the disbelievers is that they have considered: whatever we think; is good. But they slight the sayings of other people, though their every thought is good. It is a deceit, which is called “Compound Ignorance”, and whosoever is entangled in it, you should consider it as he was dead and gone from the both worlds i.e. this world and the Hereafter.

It is the sign that Allah Almighty has cursed him from His Royal Court and thrown him away from that Path which leads unto Him. While a person has been accursed by Heaven then there is none who may turn him unto the Straight Path. These people will suffer always from misunderstanding in the same condition but they should not consider that they will live ever in peace.  

Allah Almighty preserve us from it, for them will be such torment in the life of the world that their soul will be stunned. And after death their eyes will be opened and they will see that the torment of the world was nothing before the doom of the Hereafter. They should remember it that there is no one who may save them from the Wrath of Allah Almighty, neither in this life and nor on the Day of Resurrection.

أَفَمَنْ هُوَ قَآئِمٌ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ وَجَعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ شُرَكَآءَ قُلْ سَمُّوهُمْ أَمْ تُنَبِّـُٔونَهُۥ بِمَا لَا يَعْلَمُفِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَم بِظَٰهِرٍ مِّنَ ٱلْقَوْلِ بَلْ زُيِّنَ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مَكْرُهُمْ وَصُدُّوا۟ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَمَن يُضْلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِنْ هَادٍ 33

33b.  Is it that ye would inform Him of something which He knoweth not in the earth? Or is it but a way of speaking? Nay but their contrivance is made seeming fair for those who disbelieve and they are kept from the Right Path.

33b.  ‘Am  tunabbi-‘uunaHuu  bimaa  laa  ya’-lamu  fil-‘arzi  ‘am  bizaa-hirim-minal-qawl.  Bal  zuyyi-na  lilla-ziina  kafaruu  mak-ruhum  wa  sudduu  ‘anis-Sabiil.

   

Commentary

Tunabbi-‘uuna-Huu – (you would inform Him), this word is from tam-bi-‘atun, origin of which is nabaa’. Nabaa’ means “the News”. Many such words have passed; origin of which was the same. Here, the aim from the word tunabbi-‘uuna is that “you inform, you give the news”.

Sudduu – (were prevented), it is past passive voice from the word saddun. Saddun means “to prevent, to stop”. Sudduu means “they are kept (from)”.

It has been commanded in this verse that you should ask from these senseless people: Are you so much intelligent and wise that you claim that you teach The Knower of the Invisible and the Visible, and you consider! We inform Him (Allah Almighty) about such matter which is not known to Him?

Your knowledge does not surround the entire things of the earth whereas you claim that you know everything including of the heaven. Are you going to inform Allah Almighty (Who is Aware of everything of the universe) that a partner also exists equal to Him on the earth, whom He does not know? Or whether have you been learning by rote a mere conjecture word of partner and do not reflect in its meaning?

The actual matter is that you have been deceived and apparent decoration of this deception has made you careless from the Truth, and you have been negligent from the Straight Path, unto which you cannot return.

أَفَمَنْ هُوَ قَآئِمٌ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ وَجَعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ شُرَكَآءَ قُلْ سَمُّوهُمْ أَمْ تُنَبِّـُٔونَهُۥ بِمَا لَا يَعْلَمُفِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَم بِظَٰهِرٍ مِّنَ ٱلْقَوْلِ بَلْ زُيِّنَ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مَكْرُهُمْ وَصُدُّوا۟ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَمَن يُضْلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِنْ هَادٍ 33

33a.  Is He Who is Aware of the deserts of every soul (as he who is aware of nothing)? And yet they ascribe unto Allah partners. Say: Name them.

33a.  ‘Afaman  Huwa  Qaaa-‘i-mun  ‘alaa  kulli  nafsim-  bimaa  kasabat.  Wa  ja-‘aluu  Lillaahi  shurakaaa’.  Qul  sammuu-hum.

   

Commentary

‘A – (Is?, whether), this verse begins with a question, but neither its answer has been described clearly and nor the question is complete, because as we recite forth, spontaneously the both are fully understood. Complete question is that: Whether these self-made gods may be equal to the Wise, the Seer and the Omnipotent Allah? Its answers is that: No.

it is commanded in this verse: Signs and manifestations of the Knowledge and Omnipotence of Allah Almighty have been shown and caused to understand you. He is well Aware of your secrets and mysteries. He can give rewards to the obedient and punish to the disobedient. Opposite to Him, neither your self-made gods hear and nor see. And if supposing; they hear and see, even then neither they are able to give anything and nor take. Can they be able to be equal to Allah Almighty in any case?

Then what does it mean that you bow before others leaving Him (God Almighty)? What is wrong with you; notwithstanding so much clear decision, as you praise Allah Almighty; you call others also save Him? What is the matter that you ascribe the stones, the idols and the stars etc. (which are lifeless) as partners equal to the Seer, the Hearer and the Lord Who has full Power to profit and hurt? While those are lifeless then how can they have power of giving or taking anything, hearing or seeing? If you consider that someone of such qualities exists, then you should name him/her.
