Commentary

‘Awratun – (unprotected), according to Arabic language, it aims -such thing which has been surrounded by dangers and there is none who may save it.

Yasriba – it was a name of Madinah before departure of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) from Makkah. When he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and his Companions (May Allaah be pleased with them) reached there, then it was named “Madinatun-Nabii”. After simplification it was called “Madinah”.

During the times of misfortunes, some people who used to say themselves Muslims, but still the Belief had not influenced their hearts so far, they began to mislead other Muslims and frightened them by saying: O people of Yathrib! Do you observe the present circumstances? Entire people of Arab have assaulted upon us collectively. The Treaty of peace has broken which the tribe of Banu Qurayzah had made with us. What is advantage of it if we lie on this side of the Ditch before this great multitude of Arab for a long time?

It is commanded: They said: O inhabitants of Yathrib! Now our stay at this place is useless. Consequence of staying here is very obvious. Let us return to our homes.

Some active men of them reached the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and requested: Indeed, our houses in the Township are lying opened and unprotected. We don’t know what will happen. Give us permission to go back in the Township so that we may arrange to save our houses.

It is commanded: It all was their pretence of running away from the Battle Field. In fact, there was no danger for their houses or the Township.

The Commentators have explained that several men had run away after getting permission like this. Only some brave men who had strong belief, remained with the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him).
