Commentary
‘Isiyyuhum - (their
staves, sticks, cudgels etc.), this word is plural of ‘asaa, which means
“a staff”. Actually it was ‘usuu-yun, but after changing of vowels, it
became ‘isiyyun. Origin of this word is ‘a-sa-wa.
Yukhayyalu – (appeared to him, caused to imagine him),
it has been derived from takh-yiil, which has come out from the word khiaal.
Takh-yiil means “to make imaginary form, to produce anything in thought”.
When Pharaoh encouraged the wizards, they pressed forth, because
they had found that “Moses (peace be upon him) throws his staff, which becomes
a serpent, gliding”. So they brought also cords and staves along with them for
defeating Moses (peace be upon him). They said: O Moses (peace be upon him)!
Will you throw first or we should be the first to throw? Moses (peace be upon
him) replied carelessly: Nay, you should throw first!
Then, when they threw their cords and staves on the ground, Moses
(peace be upon him) considered that the earth had been filled with serpents and
those had been running here and there. But it was a game of vision’s
confinement only, actually there was no serpent etc. The wizards had strengthened
their thoughts by practice to overcome for awhile upon others.
