Commentary

‘Imraa – (dreadful, unusual, astonishing, awful), origin of this word is also ‘a-ma-ra, from which ‘Amrun has been made. It means – command, behest, affair, condition etc. ‘Imrun means “an unusual matter”.

Then they both {Moses and Khizar (peace be upon them)} marched up together. When they were moving forth, in the way they had to cross a river. They embarked in a ship. The owners of the ship were familiar of Khizar (peace be upon him). They did not take fare of ship from them and carried them to the other bank of the river. When the ship reached ashore, they disembarked. But before disembarkation, Khizar (peace be upon him) disjoined a plank with an axe from the bottom of the ship, by which a great hole had been appeared, water began to enter and then the ship was unable to move on the water. The owners of the ship did act of kindness and caused them to embark in the ship free of fare. Instead of acknowledging their kindness, their ship was damaged.

When Moses (peace be upon him) saw this; he became impatient and said: A dreadful matter has been occurred by you, which does not have any concern with the Law fixed by Allah Almighty. Now the poor owner of the ship cannot earn. What did you do this? Khizar (peace be upon him) was hearing and understanding that reproof by Moses (peace be upon him) was proper. After hearing everything, he said: Did I not say to you that you would not be able to bear with me silently and patiently?
