Commentary

Rufaatan – (fragments, pieces), it is a noun from the word rafata. Rafata means “to be scattered after being decayed, to be broken”. Rufaat is the atom which falls down after being broken from any old thing.

The people of Makkah used to say: Behold! He {Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)} says that when after death we shall remain bones only and parts of our bodies will become fragments, then again we shall come back to life and our bodies will be reproduced as it is now.

They used to consider it contrary to the sense and say about the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): He is senseless (Heaven preserve us). In this verse, they have been replied: When the body becomes fragments, even then its atoms remain in any form. Reviving it is not as much difficult as producing it first time; while it was nothing.

After death your body will remain in any form. The fragments are soft and can be gathered easily. Even if your body becomes stones or iron; cutting, breaking and connecting (all) of which is difficult or it becomes some thing other than it, to which you consider harder than stones and iron, even then your Creator and Omnipotent can reproduce you in the same form. He, Who produced you at that time when you were nothing, how can it be difficult for Him to reproduce you by changing your body parts and bring it again in its original form, while your body already exists in any form?
