have appointed them among the ceremonies of Allah. Therein ye have much good.
So mention the name of Allah over them when they are drawn up in lines. Then
when their flanks fall (dead), eat thereof and feed the beggar and the
suppliant.

Commentary
Budna – (big cattle), this word is plural of budnatun, which
means “the cattle which have big bodies, camel and cow etc. are included in
this kind. Sheep and goat etc. are not called “budnatun”.
Swaaaffa – (drawn up in lines), this word is plural
of saaaffatun, which is feminine of saaaffun. Its origin is saffun,
which means “to stand up on three feet and raise up the front left hand. It is the
method of slaughtering a camel for sacrificing. The camel is not sacrificed by
causing to lie down, but it is slaughtered in standing position by keeping its
mouth unto The Temple of Ka’-ba in Makkah. And its front left leg
is fastened with its knee. If there are many camels for sacrificing, then those
all are drawn up in a line and by reciting “BisMillaahi, ‘Allaahu ‘Akbar,
the spear is pierced in great vessel over its breast. When the blood is drained
out then it falls down unto any flank. At that time its flesh is separated from
its skin. This process is called Nahr. It is the way of sacrificing any
camel.
Wajabat – (they fell), it is past tense from the
word wajabun, which means “to fall on any flank”.
‘Al-qaani-‘u – (that who is sitting with patience), the
person who does not beg from any other person, it is the subject from Qanaa-‘at,
which means “contentment”.
Mu’-tarra – (the suppliant), the person; who begs
from the people.
It is commanded: There are worldly benefits also in the camels for
you, as well as Allaah Almighty has made them a source of His
remembrance too. You should mention the name of Allaah Almighty over
them when you are going to slaughter them for sacrificing and they are drawn up
in lines. When their flanks fall dead, then you should separate their flesh
from the skin, eat its meat yourselves and feed the necessitous people, whether
those are beggars who do not have patience or they are suppliant. In the Arab, often
camels were slaughtered for sacrifice. Way of its sacrificing has been
explained in this verse and the Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace,
glory, blessings and peace be upon him) has shown practically that how should
it be slaughtered. Now it is the tradition of sacrificing the camels but other
cattle are sacrificed by causing to lie down as usual.
