Commentary
Rushda – (proper
course, well understanding of goodness), this word has passed earlier. Rashadun
is another form of it, which is of the same meanings.
Tamaasiilun – (images,
idols etc.), it is plural of timsaalun, origin of which is masala.
The words misal, masal and misaal etc. have been derived
from the same word. It aims “pictures and statues of living beings”.
It was commanded previously
that We sent Our Messengers (peace be upon them) to save the human beings from
going astray.
In this verse, it is commanded:
Before Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them), We bestowed, at first,
understanding of good matters and virtue of mind to Abraham (peace be upon him).
Then We appointed him Our Messenger (peace be upon him), because We were Aware
that he will be able to perform the duty of Messenger-hood well. Therefore, his
nature of wisdom and sense began to work. When he (peace be upon him) observed
that the people adore the idols by putting them in front; and saw own father
that he makes the images of stone and teaches the way of their adoration to the
people, then he (peace be upon him) asked from his father including his entire
folk: How can these images be your worshipped, which you have made yourselves
with your hands; and you pay devotion unto them? They said: We don’t know that
how these images became our worshipped. But; however we saw our forefathers
adoring them.
