109. We sent not before thee (any messengers)
save men whom We inspired from among the folk of the townships. Have they not
traveled in the land and seen the nature of the consequence for those who
were before them? And verily the abode of the Hereafter, for those who ward
off (evil), is best. Have ye then no sense?

Commentary
Allah (Arabic name of
God), The Most High, commands: O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace
be upon him)! Those Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them), to whom We
sent before you too, were from among the people of the townships. We chose
anyone of them and began to inspire unto Him (peace be upon him). Circumstances
of ancient people, which We cause to hear you, are not untrue.
These people who are
around you, can travel in the land and see that those who did not obey Our
Chosen Messenger (peace be upon him), what did happen worse with them? These
people have fallen in love with the rank and grandeur of the world, whereas
they have to die. They should arrange for the life after death and give up thinking
about this world. The people before them have departed and left the world. Do
they not know “how to take warning from their (old peoples’) circumstances”? It
is entirely a fault of their sense.
It is known from this
verse that neither any messenger was sent from among the women and nor from the
villagers; any person was bestowed with this dignity. The Messengers (peace be
upon them) were chosen always from among the men
of the townships.
