Chapter “The
Prophets” – (Suratul – ‘Ambiyaaa’
- 21)
‘A-‘uu-zu Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir-
Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)
Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

بَلْ قَالُوٓا۟ أَضْغَٰثُ أَحْلَٰمٍۭ بَلِ ٱفْتَرَىٰهُ بَلْ هُوَ شَاعِرٌ فَلْيَأْتِنَا بِـَٔايَةٍ كَمَآ أُرْسِلَٱلْأَوَّلُونَ 5
مَآ ءَامَنَتْ قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْيَةٍ أَهْلَكْنَٰهَآ أَفَهُمْ يُؤْمِنُونَ 6
5. Nay, say they,
(these are but) muddled dreams; nay, he hath but invented it; nay, he is but
a poet. Let him bring us a portent even as those of old (who were God’s
Messengers) were sent (with portents).
6. Not a township
believed of those which We destroyed before them (though We sent them
portents): would they then believe?

5. Bal qaaluuu
‘azgaasu ‘ah-laamim- baliftaraahu bal
huwa shaa-‘ir. Fal-ya’-tinaa bi-‘Aayatin- kamaaa
‘ursilal-‘awwa-luun.
6. Maaa ‘aamanat
qablahum-min- qaryatin ‘ahlak-Naahaa. ‘Afahum
yu’-minuun.

Commentary
‘Azgaasu ‘ah-laamin – (muddled dreams),
this word has passed in Chapter Joseph. The aim from it is: Forms of perplexed
thoughts which are seen in dreams.
Bal – (nay,
but), the person who begins to say something other than what he was saying
earlier. When we describe about his different sayings, we use this word for
separating his every saying.
As a matter of fact, oppressive
people of Makkah had become very restless. When they heard badness of
polytheism in the teachings of Islam, they were embarrassed that, “it is like a
command of the death of our chieftainship. Our influence, our income, our
commandment, our dignity and honor etc. are as finished”. Sometimes they used
to say to the people: Don’t listen to it because it is a charm of magic. At another
time they used to say: These are nothing but muddled dreams. They used to say
also: These are false fables which have been collected from hither and thither,
and which have been named as “Qur’an”. They tried to defame in these
words too: He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is a poet (who,
according to the people of Arab, was under influence of any demon).
Their object was that the
people should not pay attention unto the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and
peace be upon him). At last they said: If he says that he is a Messenger, then
he should bring a portent even as those of old who were Messengers and who were
sent with portents, so that after looking the portent; we may have faith that
yes; this is a Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) also like
them (peace be upon them). This saying was stronger for misleading the common
people.
Therefore, its answer has been
given first of all that “the Messengers (peace be upon them) of ancient people
showed them great portents and miracles. Even then; while they did not believe,
then can you expect from these people now that they will believe? All of them,
who did not believe, were destroyed.
