hunger afflicteth them in the Way of Allah, nor step they any step that
angereth the disbelievers, nor gain they from the enemy a gain, but a good

Laa yata-‘uuna – ({(they)
do not step}, origin of this word is wat-‘un. Wat-‘un means “to crush
something under foot, to advance by a movement of the feet, to move”.
Mawtii – (gait walk, motion), this word is also from the
same origin as mentioned above.
Laa yanaa-luuna – (they
do not gain). This word has been derived from nay-lun, which has been
used also in the verse after this word. Nay-lun means “to get, to gain,
to find anything”.
Those Muslims, who did exist in Madinah and its vicinity, were
instructed in the previous verse: You should participate sincerely and promptly
in hard and arduous works along with the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and
peace be upon Him), which He has been doing in the Way of God Almighty. It is
not suitable for you in any way that He (SallAllaahu
alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) suffer from hardships by leaving His ease and
comfort, remain thirsty and hungry for the Pleasure of Allah Almighty, and you
sit at your homes satisfactorily and engage yourselves in eating and drinking
only. It has been explained in this verse that which hardship you will suffer
for the Cause of Allah Almighty, will be counted in your conduct sheet as a
good work.
It is commanded that the Muslims are being enjoined for all this; for
the purpose that in it, there are higher degrees for them in the Hereafter. Against
every painful work, a good work will be written in their Record Book. And then
its retaliation will be given to them in the world and in the Day of Resurrection.
At last, they will get success, honor and eminence in the world, and on the Day
of Judgment they will be sent to the Gardens for ever. Their thirst, hunger,
hard working and putting any step for keeping the refractory Infidels under
influence, punishing them properly due to their impudence and rebellion, is
because of sincerity for Allah Almighty, so every deed of such kind will be
mentioned in the column of Right Acts. Allah Almighty does not desire to take
work from you without any exchange. There are good remunerations and rewards
with Him for those who do good. Any good work of any human being will not be
destroyed.
