Salvation from drowning
Chapter “Mu’-minuun” – (The Believers) -
23
‘A-‘uu-zu Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah
from Satan the outcast)
Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

فَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ أَنِ ٱصْنَعِ ٱلْفُلْكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا وَوَحْيِنَا فَإِذَا جَآءَ أَمْرُنَا وَفَارَ ٱلتَّنُّورُ فَٱسْلُكْ فِيهَا مِن كُلٍّ زَوْجَيْنِ ٱثْنَيْنِ وَأَهْلَكَ إِلَّا مَن سَبَقَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلْقَوْلُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَا تُخَٰطِبْنِى فِىٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓا۟ إِنَّهُم مُّغْرَقُونَ 27
فَإِذَا ٱسْتَوَيْتَ أَنتَ وَمَن مَّعَكَ عَلَى ٱلْفُلْكِ فَقُلِ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِى نَجَّىٰنَا مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ 28

27b. save him thereof
against whom the Word hath already gone forth. And plead not with Me on
behalf of those who have done wrong. Lo! They will be drowned.
28. And when thou art
on board the ship, thou and whoso is with thee, then say: Praise be to Allah
Who hath saved us from the wrongdoing folk!

27b. ‘illaa man
sabaqa ‘alayhil-Qawlu minhum
wa laa tukhaatibNii fillaziina
zalamuu. ‘Innahum- mugraquun.
28. Fa-‘izasta-wayta ‘anta
wa mamma-‘aka ‘alal-fulki
faqu-lil- Hamdu
Lillaahillazii najjaa-naa minal-qawmiz-zaalimiin.

Commentary
‘Ista-wayta – (you are on board), this word has come
out from ‘istawaa-‘un, which has been derived from sawaa-‘un. Sawaa-‘un
means “equal, on a par”. ‘Istawaa-‘un means “to sit satisfactorily”.
Allaah Almighty says: We commanded to Noah (peace be upon him)! When
the water begin to gush from the earth, then you should cause to enter one pair
(male and female) of every living creature including all members of your family;
upon the ship. But there would be some such people who, by your saying, would
not go on board the ship, and they will think: we shall be saved from drowning by
climbing on higher places. But it will be their false thought. They certainly
will be drowned. No one can escape from drowning without embarking. You should
not talk with Us about the people who are habitual of doing wrong and oppressing
the feeble. Your recommendation concerning them will not be accepted. It has
been decided about them that they will suffer from retribution of their wicked
deeds and they shall be drowned.
When you and your followers go on board the ship at ease, then
you should praise your Lord (Allaah Almighty) and be thankful to Him and
say: Thank God Who saved us from the wrongdoers and preserved us from the
torment of drowning.
