111. On the Day when
every soul will come pleading for itself, and every soul will be repaid what
it did, and they will not be wronged.
112. And Allah coineth
a similitude: a township that dwelt secure and well content, its provision
coming to it in abundance from every side, but it disbelieved in Allah’s
favors, so Allah made it experience the garb of dearth and fear because of
what they used to do.

Commentary
‘Azaaqa – (made it experience, caused to taste), it is past tense from the
word ‘izaaqatun, which has been derived from zawq. Zawq
means “to taste the deliciousness, to experience”. According to phraseology it
aims “to be involved in any such condition that its effect is perceived in the
heart”. The word ‘azaaqa is its active verb, so it will be meant “to
cause to taste”.
In the first verse of this lesson, it is commanded:
Remember! Such a Day will come soon when every individual will be involved in
own misfortune and to save his life from the trouble, he will say different
words at different times. But he will deserve only that which he earned during
his life of this world (requital of good or evil deeds).
In the second verse, people of Makkah are
being caused to understand: Imagine about that township where Rule of Peace and
Security was in force by the Grace of God Almighty. Provision for eating and
drinking was available. Then people of that township became as much arrogant
that they did never think about their Creator and followed madly their wishes.
Allah Almighty caused to taste them retribution of their arrogance. Therefore,
famine and fear surrounded them from all around.
