BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

And if the people of the townships had believed and kept away from evil, surely We should have opened for them blessings from the sky and from the earth; but (unto every messenger) they gave the lie, so We seized them on account of what they used to earn.

Barakaat – (blessings), this word is plural of barakah. It has two meanings: 1). That goodness, which is always. 2). That a little thing, which is more useful. Here it aims “both kinds of goodness”.

It was described in the previous verses that whenever, the people do not give attention to the commands of the Messengers (blessings on Them), the casual tribulations and distresses are sent upon them and the purpose is that they should obey Them having fear of God Almighty. If they do not correct themselves, then casual blessings are rained on them. When they do not learn a lesson from changes of these conditions but ignore that these are common things, have been happening since the beginning and will be happening always. Sometimes sunshine and sometimes shade, sometimes hot and sometimes cold, sometimes dawn and sometimes darkness – what is relation of these changes with belief and disbelief in Allah and what contact have our deeds with it?

In this verse, the said relationship has been caused to know and described very clearly that: If the entire people had believed and they would have kept away themselves from the evil deeds, then certainly, Allah Almighty should have opened for them blessings continuously from the sky and from the earth, and they would have reaped more advantages and benefits with less labor.

It is commanded that if the people of the townships had believed in Allah Almighty in obedience of their Prophets (blessings on Them) and they had given up bad habits and evils, it would have rained from the sky timely in an appropriate way. But instead of it, the people falsified the Prophets and Messengers (blessings on Them). They turned away from beneficial works, which were advised to them by Them (blessings on Them). As a result, their morals were corrupted. Finally they suffered the consequences. Following blindly own wishes and caprices bloomed and they had to taste great punishment against violation of the law. Because of hateful actions they were killed.

It is known from these verses that when prescribed rules of Allah Almighty are violated, at first; temporary afflictions are sent by Allah Almighty so that the people repent of sins due to fear of Allah Almighty, give up evil acts and do the good. If they do not become aware of it and keep up committing evil deeds continuously, then prosperity is given, but it is also temporarily.

Even then, if the people are fooling themselves, then any big disaster comes on them suddenly, due to which they become as grinded to powder. We have come to understand from this verse that immoralities of the people are main cause of their destruction. First; they are ruined in this world, but if they are saved here due to any reason, surely; immediately after death; they are involved in the condition of dying out constantly.
