Commentary
Khaa-wiyatun – (desolate, empty and in ruins),
During journey from Makkah to the Country of Syria, you
have to pass through Alquraa Valley. There are the ruins of the
Townships of Thamud. When people of Makkah used to go to Syria,
they used to see those ruins. The same has been pointed out in this verse that
which ruins you see in Alquraa Valley, those are ruins of the houses
where the people of Thamud used to dwell. Those refractory and
prosperous stone-cutters considered wrongfully that they would live always
cheerfully in those houses. Produce of land in that Country was plentiful. Gardens
were fully loaded with fruits. Water springs were flowing every side. They used
to eat and drink thoughtlessly and dwell pleasantly. Their chieftains had been
haughty and they had forgotten Allaah Almighty entirely.
They did not follow the advice of Prophet Salih (peace be
upon him), but became his foes. At last they were punished due to their
infidelity and violence. Severe earthquake came with oppressive thundering
sound. The entire folk were ruined instantly. Their houses fell down and
gardens dried.
Allaah Almighty saved by His Grace Salih (peace be upon him)
along with those who believed in him and who used to ward off evil and keep
away from violence. After hearing their circumstances, sensible people should
take it as a warning.
