The Day of Sabbath

Suratun-Nahl - (The Bee) - 16

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

إِنَّمَا جُعِلَٱلسَّبْتُ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ٱخْتَلَفُوا۟ فِيهِ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَيَحْكُمُ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ فِيمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ 124  

124.  The Sabbath was appointed only for those who differed concerning it, and lo! Thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that wherein they used to differ.

124.  ‘Innamaa  ju-‘ilas-Sabtu  ‘alallaziinakh-talafuu  fiih.  Wa  ‘inna  Rabbaka  layah-kumu  baynahum  Yawmal-Qiyaamati  fiimaa  kaanuu  fiihi  yakh-talifuun.

       

Commentary

‘Allaziinakh-talafuu  fiihi – (those who differed concerning it). It aims “the children of Israel”. Here, one attribute of them has been described instead of saying them “the Jews” so that it may be made known that this attribute had become their necessary disposition. It was the reason that they were strictly commanded so that they may be corrected. Purpose of revealing this verse is that you should not be involved in this bad habit (of disobedience). On the contrary, you entire people should obey all orders collectively without wrangling whatever is commanded to you.

It is commanded that the Day of Sabbath (Saturday) was appointed only for the Jews, so that the habit of abiding by the Commands of God Almighty is taught to them, and by giving punishment of disobedience in the world, it is determined as cause of warning for other people. Even then those people did not make the obedience their habit. They used to give their opinion in every matter whatsoever was commanded to them. They were just like wicked and perverse children who express their opinions strictly and it is their habit that they refuse to do whatever is said to them. The Jews were divided into different sects concerning the Sabbath also. Some of them accepted but some did not obey. At last those who did not obey; were made pigs and monkey-like in the world.

After that, the doom of the Doomsday has been waiting for them and they will be punished very severely. Accordingly, it has been commanded in this verse: They will come to know the truth of those matters on the Day of Resurrection; in which they differed and disputed.

From it, the Muslims {Nation of Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him)} should take a lesson that when it is proved concerning a matter that commandment of Allah Almighty and Sayings of His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him) is this; then they should neither argue and nor raise objections in its execution. Seeking excuses for violation of order after knowing it; was nature of the Jews, which is against the teachings of Islam. First condition in it is to obey the Command.

Follow the Religion of Abraham

Suratun-Nahl - (The Bee) - 16

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

ثُمَّ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ أَنِ ٱتَّبِعْ مِلَّةَ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ حَنِيفًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ 123  

123.  And afterward We inspired thee (O Muhammad, saying): Follow the Religion of Abraham, as one by nature Upright. And he was not of the idolaters.

123.  Summa  ‘aw-hayNaaa  ‘ilayka  ‘anittabi’  Millata  ‘Ibraa-hiima  Haniifaa.  Wa  maa  kaana  minal-  mushrikiin.

       

Commentary

There is a mention about the Religion of Messenger Abraham (peace be upon him) in this verse, from which it is found that during his period, strong Principles of the Religion had been recorded in writing. The same Principles were presented before the Children of Israel by the Messengers Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them). But the people of the Scripture accepted some of them and rejected some of them, and in this way, the Jews disfigured the entire Religion.

Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him) was sent to make the same Religion current again and produce it before the mankind in its original and complete form. Holy Qur’an was revealed upon him, in which those Principles of the Religion were explained and for all the human beings of the entire world, it was produced in full and controlled form.

Origin of those entire Principles is that human beings should not be interested in any thing from any person save Allah Almighty, and they should turn unto Him with pure intention by turning away from all.

Summary of above mentioned description is that Abraham (peace be upon him) was The Monotheist who was never an idol-worshiper {he (peace be upon him) did never make any partner of Allah Almighty or in His Attributes}. He (peace be upon him) believed that only One God is The Creator, Master and Lord of all. He (peace be upon him) used to ask Him for whatever he wished. He (peace be upon him) was sure that the entire Bounties of the world have been bestowed by Allah Almighty. Therefore, we should be thankful to Him every time. We should never worship any other but Him only.

It is the summary of Islam and the same name (Islam) of this Religion has been chosen by him (peace be upon him). Last Messenger, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him) has come in this world to regularize the same commandments. To remove the stubbornness of the mankind, it is the proved cure.

إِنَّ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ كَانَ أُمَّةً قَانِتًا لِّلَّهِ حَنِيفًا وَلَمْ يَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ 120

 شَاكِرًا لِّأَنْعُمِهِ ٱجْتَبَىٰهُ وَهَدَىٰهُ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ 121

 وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُ فِىٱلدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَإِنَّهُۥ فِى ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ لَمِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ 122  

120.  Lo! Abraham was of a nation obedient to Allah, by nature upright. And he was not of the idolaters- 121.  Thankful for His Bounties. He chose him and He guided him unto a Straight Path. 122.  And We gave him good in the world. And in the Hereafter he is among the Righteous.

120.  ‘Inna  ‘Ibraa-hiima  kaana  ‘ummatan  qaani-tal-Lillaahi  haniifaa.  Wa  lam  yaku  minal-mushrikiin. 121.  Shaakiral-li-‘an-‘umih.  ‘Ijtabaahu  wa  hadaahu  ‘ilaa  Siraatim-Mustaqiim. 122.  Wa  ‘aatayNaahu  fid-dunyaa  Hasanah.  Wa  ‘innahuu  fil-  ‘Aakhirati  laminas-Saalihiin.

       

Commentary

‘Ummatun – (A Spiritual Guide), this word has come out from “’umm”, here it aims “Priest, Chief and A Spiritual Guide”. This word has already passed.

Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) and after him, Prophet Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), these two have passed such August Persons, who themselves were a complete nation. The society, which will be organized on their pattern, only that society can be their successor and caliph.

In this verse, the attention has been drawn unto the same side that Abraham (peace be upon him) was a collection of good manners among the human beings. He (peace be upon him) was most obedient to Allah Almighty, by nature upright, who did never ascribe any partner in the Attributes of God Almighty. He (peace be upon him) was thankful for the Bounties of Allah Almighty always. God Almighty appointed him as His chosen servant and guided him unto the Straight Path. He kept him (peace be upon him) in good condition and in the Hereafter also, he will be among the righteous people.

 وَعَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ هَادُوا۟ حَرَّمْنَا مَا قَصَصْنَا عَلَيْكَ مِن قَبْلُ وَمَاظَلَمْنَٰهُمْ وَلَٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ 118

 ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لِلَّذِينَ عَمِلُوا۟ ٱلسُّوٓءَ بِجَهَٰلَةٍ ثُمَّ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ وَأَصْلَحُوٓا۟ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهَالَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ 119

118.  And unto those who are Jews We have forbidden that which We have already related unto thee. And We wronged them not, but they were wont to wrong themselves. 119.  Then lo! Thy Lord – for those who do evil in ignorance and afterward repent and amend – lo! (for them) thy Lord is afterward indeed Forgiving, Merciful.

118.  Wa  ‘alallaziina  haaduu  harramNaa  maa  qasasNaa  ‘alay-ka  min  qabl.  Wa  maa  zalam-Naahum  wa  laakin  kaanuuu  ‘anfu-sahum  yazlimuun. 119.  Summa  ‘inna  Rabbaka  lillaziina  ‘amilus-suuu-‘a  bi-jahaa-latin  summa  taabuu  mim-  ba’-di  zaalika  wa  ‘aslahuuu,  ‘inna  Rabbaka  mim-  ba’-dihaa  la-Gafuurur-Rahiim. (Section 15)

       

Commentary

It is commanded that even the Jews did not act upon the commandments of Allah Almighty and they did willingly what they wished. Then finally, behold that what happened to them. Due to their stubbornness, We forbade them from some things. O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): We already have caused to hear you about those things. Although We were Powerful, even then We did not punish them without grounds. We do not wrong any individual. However if someone is wont to wrong himself, it is his own will.

If any person does evil in ignorance and afterward he repents and intends strongly that he will never commit such evil in future, in addition he tries to amend his condition, then We forgive his error and accept his repentance. If he goes astray hundred times after repenting and then repents again, We accept his repentance even hundreds of times.

 وَلَا تَقُولُوا۟ لِمَا تَصِفُ أَلْسِنَتُكُمُ ٱلْكَذِبَ هَٰذَا حَلَٰلٌ وَهَٰذَا حَرَامٌ لِّتَفْتَرُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلْكَذِبَ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَيَفْتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلْكَذِبَ لَا يُفْلِحُونَ 116

  مَتَٰعٌ قَلِيلٌ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ 117

116.  And speak not, concerning that which your own tongues qualify (as clean or unclean), the falsehood: “This is lawful and this is forbidden,” so that ye forge a lie against Allah. Lo! Those who forge a lie against Allah will not succeed. 117.  A brief enjoyment (will be theirs), and theirs a painful doom.

116.  Wa  laa  taquuluu  limaa  tasifu  ‘al-sinatu-kumul-kaziba  haazaa  halaalunw-wa   haazaa  haraamul-litaftaruu  ‘alAllaahil-kazib.  ‘Innal-laziina  yafta-ruuna  ‘alAllaahil-kaziba  laa  yufli-huun. 117.  Mataa-‘un  qaliil.  Wa  lahum  ‘azaabun  ‘aliim.

       

Commentary

Radically the ears of human beings have been opened in this verse that: What authority do you have? You are unable to restrain yourselves. Who has given you power that you should make laws and permit for that which you desire and prevent from that which you do not desire?

It is commanded: your claim of making lawful or forbidden is falsehood. These are only baseless and self-fabricated matters, forged by your tongues. You should not forge a lie against Allah Almighty because the people who wish to bring in force their self-invented laws in the name of Allah Almighty and Divine Law, they will never succeed. What if they reaped a little casual benefit? How long will it go with them? At last they will fail. And on the Day of Resurrection, a painful doom will be ready for them, by which they will remain restless for ever.

Among the Muslims also, some scholar, who are absorbed in worldly affairs, accomplished well their desires in the name of Allah Almighty and Religious Law. Some refractory rulers oppressed their people and commanded them according to their wishes. Thus their sovereignty was snatched but alas! they did not leave their haughtiness.

 إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْمَيْتَةَ وَٱلدَّمَ وَلَحْمَ ٱلْخِنزِيرِ وَمَآ أُهِلَّ لِغَيْرِ ٱللَّهِ بِهِۦ فَمَنِ ٱضْطُرَّ غَيْرَبَاغٍ وَلَا عَادٍ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ 115

115.  He hath forbidden for you only carrion and blood and swine-flesh and that which hath been immolated in the name of any other than Allah, but he who is driven thereto, neither craving nor transgressing, lo! Then Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

115.  ‘Innamaa  harrama  ‘alay-kumul-  maytata  waddama  wa  lahmal-  khinziiri  wa  maaa  ‘uhilla  li-gayRillaahi  bih.  Fa-maniz-turra  gayra  baaginw-wa  laa  ‘aadin-  fa-‘innAllaaha  Gafuurur-Rahiim.

       

Commentary

It is commanded that you should not use, the meat of dead animal, flowing blood, swine-flesh and that which is slaughtered in the name of any other than Allah. However, if someone is going to die due to hunger, and he does not have any other thing for eating save above mentioned things, then he can use only that quantity of the forbidden things; by which he may live. At that time, neither his intention should be to infringe the command of Allah Almighty and nor he should use more quantity than authorized.

In such condition, Allah Almighty will forgive his errors and omissions, because He is Merciful on His servants. In Holy Qur’an, which particular matter has been stressed more than all other, is that; neither any person and nor any thing should be made a partner with Allah Almighty or in His Epithets. If someone accepts that he himself or any other than Allah Almighty is authorized to make Laws; that is also a plurality. And perhaps it is the worst kind of plurality. Making forbidden things lawful for oneself and lawful things as forbidden with own will is violation of the Law of God Almighty; for which He has never permitted.

All human beings are slaves and servants of Allah Almighty. Neither someone else save Him has any power to grant permission and nor is authorized to prevent. It is the reason that in Islam, The Omnipotent and The Owner of all things is Allah, The Most High. Except Him, there is no one who may give any thing to any other and nor has any individual any power of snatching any thing from any other. The person who did not understand this matter, verily he did not understand Islam.

 وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ وَهُمْ ظَٰلِمُونَ 113

 فَكُلُوا۟ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ حَلَٰلًا طَيِّبًاوَٱشْكُرُوا۟ نِعْمَتَ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمْ إِيَّاهُ تَعْبُدُونَ 114

113.  And verily there had come unto them a messenger from among them, but they had denied him, and so the torment seized them while they were wrongdoers. 114.  So eat of the lawful and good food which Allah hath provided for you, and thank the Bounty of your Lord if it is Him ye serve.

113.  Wa  laqad  jaaa-‘ahum  Rasuulum-minhum  fa-kazza-buuhu  fa-‘akhaza-humul-‘azaabu  wa  hum  zaalimuun. 14.  Fa-kuluu  mimmaa  razaka-kumUllaahu  Halaalan-  Tayyi-banw-wash-kuruu  ni’-matAllaahi  ‘in  kuntum  ‘iyyaaHu  ta’-buduun.

       

Commentary

It has been commanded in this verse: We chose a Man from them according to Our Rule and appointed Him as Our Messenger (peace be upon him) unto them. Then We said to him! Go and instruct them, because We do not ruin any nation until We do not manifest the Truth upon them by sending Our Messenger (peace be upon him). But they did not give ear to the sayings of the Messenger (peace be upon him) and remained involved in wicked deeds. When they were doing wrong, the torment seized them and due to their unreasonable violations, they were ruined.

Then it is commanded: You should take a lesson from these Revelations by meditating into them and behold that in Makkah, Allah Almighty has arranged to provide you lawful and good food, facilities of ease and comfort. Therefore, it does not suit you that you reap advantages from these things but do not be thankful servants to Allah Almighty. You should eat and drink those lawful and good things which Allah Almighty has given to you. And you should not fix any thing lawful or forbidden at your own, and consider that these entire Bounties are given to you by Allah Almighty. So if you are desirous to live as His servant and pass your life in His adoration, then you should be thankful to Him every time, otherwise; your name will be registered in the list of rebellious people, and the curse of ungratefulness will fall to your lot.
