The obstinacy

Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

32.  They said: O Noah! Thou hast disputed with us and multiplied disputation with us; now bring upon us that wherewith thou threatenest us, if thou art of the truthful. 33.  He said: Only Allah will bring it upon you if He will, and ye can by no means escape.

32.  Qaaluu  yaa-Nuuhu  qad  jaadal-tanaa  fa-‘ak-sarta  jidaa-lanaa  fa’-tinaa  bimaa  ta-‘idu-naaa  ‘in kunta  minas-saadiqiin. 33.  Qaala  ‘innamaa  ya’-tii-kum  bi-Hillaahu  ‘in-  shaaa-‘a  wa  maaa  ‘antum  bi-mu’-jiziin.

Commentary

After hearing the sayings of Prophet Noah (peace be upon Him), which reply was given by His folk, from it, their entire nature comes in front. Noah (peace be upon him) caused to understand them meanings of Messenger/Prophet and caused to count those attributes, due to which a Man is appointed as a Prophet/Messenger. It was made known to them: Messenger/Prophet (peace be upon him) is not owner of wealth, property or power of possession. Moreover, He (peace be upon him) has fellow-feeling and sympathy with the entire human beings. Therefore, He (peace be upon him) does not want to see them going on the way of destruction and let them go.

For this purpose, Allah Almighty reveals upon Him (peace be upon him) some instructions and He desires to deliver the people such instructions.

In this verse, that last answer exists which was given by the folk of Noah (peace be upon him) after hearing His instructions. From it, utmost degree of their negligence, stubbornness, perverseness and scorn from useful matters appears. Summary of their reply is: Stop it. We have heard sufficient from you. Bring upon us that torment instantly; from which you threaten us, if you are the truthful.

When Messenger Noah (peace be upon him) heard this answer from the people, He (peace be upon him) said: torment is in the power of Allah Almighty. He will cause to taste you even in the world if He will desire. Only He is Able to send the agony, not anyone else. But when it will come, then you will find shelter nowhere. None can restrain Allah Almighty in any matter. You are nothing before Him.

Dignity of the Prophet

Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

31.  I say not unto you: “I have the treasures of Allah” nor that “I have knowledge of the Unseen”, nor say I: “Lo! I am an angel!” Nor say I unto those whom your eyes scorn that Allah will not give them good. Allah knoweth best what is in their hearts. Lo! Then indeed I should be of the wrongdoers.

31.  Wa  laaa  ‘aquulu  lakum  ‘in-dii  khazaaa-‘inUllaahi  wa  laaa  ‘a’-lamul-gayba  wa  laaa  ‘aquulu  ‘innii  malakunw-wa  laaa  ‘aquulu  lilla-ziina  taz-dariii  ‘a’-yunu-kum  lany-yu’-ti-yahu-mUllaahu  khay-raa.  ‘Allaahu  ‘a’-lamu  bimaa  fiii  ‘anfu-sihim.  ‘Inniii  ‘izalla-minalz-zaalimiin.

Commentary

Prophet Noah (peace be upon Him) commands to his folk after manifesting the position of the Prophets (peace be upon them) in these words: Allah Almighty has appointed me His Messenger. Therefore, on account of above mentioned principle, I do not say to you that I have power over all things or I know the Unseen, or that I am not a mankind but an angel, who is pure from the necessities of human nature. On account of the knowledge, which Allah Almighty has given to me, certainly I say that the people, to whom you consider contemptible, abject or lower in status, they can have hidden good qualities, on account of which, they can acquire higher ranks in the Court of Allah Almighty. It cannot be so, that to whom you have determined mean and ignoble, they cannot get promotion with their effort.

I don’t know condition of the hearts of such people that I; myself make a claim and say that verily, they are good-for-nothing in every respect. Those, who guess such ventures, are at wrong. If I too; begin to say like those misled people then, I shall be counted also in the wrongdoers, because he is the wrongdoer, who decides wrongfully due to stupidity and bullies, moreover he determines forcibly that his false decisions are correct and acts according to them.

30.  And, O my people! Who would deliver me from Allah if I thrust them away? Will ye not then reflect?

30.  Wa  yaa-qawmi  manyyan-surunii  minAllaahi  ‘in-  tarat-tuhum.  ‘Afa-laa  tazak-karuun.

Commentary

Messenger Noah (peace be upon Him) said that all human beings are creature of Allah Almighty and according to it; all are equal. I don’t have any right to make groups of the people on the basis of temporary splendor, wealth and property, and let just those people come unto me who consider themselves on a higher status in the world. This is the matter; self fabricated by themselves. Allah Almighty has fixed the status of the world as worthless.

Now think a little while about it that how can I say to such people, who come to me for hearing the Message of Allah Almighty that, I have no time for them, they should not come unto me? Or those who already have been sitting near me, should I thrust them away? If I did so, Allah Almighty would punish me for such conduct because it is disobedience of His command, then who will save me from the wrath of Allah Almighty?

Why will Allah Almighty listen to the recommendation of you proud and wealthy people? Recommendations are heard by the greedy governors of the world, because they receive gifts and bribes from the wealthy people. When the time comes; they need their favor, otherwise their superior people will be displeased from them. Allah is the Strongest Ruler. Bribe and recommendation is not acceptable to Him. Do you not have any sense of thinking about it and that you should not talk improperly?

This verse is saying very clearly that caste, race and sect, wealth and property, riches and poverty, nation and country are nothing. The man who is king and sitting on the throne is fully equal of that person before Allah Almighty; who works hard for livelihood of himself and his family. However, if that poor person believes in Allah Almighty and worships Him, then he is better than the king near Allah Almighty.

Contentment from the wealth

Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

29.  And O my people! I ask of you no wealth therefor. My reward is the concern only of Allah, and I am not going to thrust away those who believe. Lo! They have to meet their Lord- but I see you a folk that are ignorant.

29.  Wa  yaa-qawmi  laaa  ‘as-‘alu-kum  ‘alay-hi  maalaa.  ‘In  ‘ajri-ya  ‘illaa  ‘alAllaahi  wa  maaa  ‘anaa  bi-taari-dillaziina  ‘aamanuu.  ‘Innahum-mulaa-quu  Rabbihim  wa  laakin-nii  ‘araakum  qawman-  taj-haluun.

Commentary

Bi-taari-din – (one who drives out. Thrusts away), it is the subject from tar-dun. Tar-dun means “to thrust away, to drive out from own position, to dismiss someone”.

Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) says: You would have considered that I am a poor person, so by making a fresh discourse, I ask of you some wealth in the form of charity and alms etc. God preserve me from it. I do not desire even a coin from you. I do my work according to the command of Allah Almighty and only for His pleasure. My reward is the concern of Him only.

Second thing which you say is that poor workmen and the most abject people come unto me, and you consider insult in sitting with them. You should think that while I am not desirous of any wealth from you; save it that I call the people only unto Allah Almighty, then how can I drive out such people who come unto me only for the purpose of putting belief in Allah Almighty? Their dealing is with Allah Almighty. He is their Lord. They have to be present before their Lord on an appointed Day. You claim that I should thrust them away. It manifests clearly that you are ignorant. You decide on the basis of apparent condition that they are mean fellows and inferior to you. But in fact, a man does not become noble and honorable due to apparent ostentation, wealth and property. His respect and nobility depends on his good habits. Mostly, the wealth and property make the people ill-natured, obstinate and ignoble. Poor people accept the truth quickly.

28.  He said: O my people! Bethink you, if I rely on a clear proof from my Lord and there hath come unto me a Mercy from His presence, and it hath been made obscure to you, can we compel you to accept it when ye are averse thereto?

28.  Qaala  yaa-qawmi  ‘ara-‘ay-tum  ‘in-  kuntu  ‘alaa  Bayyi-natim-mir-Rabii  wa  ‘aataa-nii  Rahmatam-min  ‘IndiHii  fa-‘ummi-yat  ‘alay-kum.  ‘Anul-zimuku-muuhaa  wa  ‘antum  lahaa  kaari-huun.

Commentary

Bayyi-natun – (a conspicuous thing), a clear proof or an open path, this word has been used many times ago.

ummi-yat – (hath been made obscure), it is a past tense and its origin is ta’-mi-yatun, which has been derived from the word ‘amaya. ‘Amaya means blindness. Ta’-mi-yatun means “to hide any thing in such a way that someone else may not see it”. Ma-‘ammaa is a famous word, which also has come out from the same; and it aims “the obscure thing”.

‘Anul-zimuku-muuhaa – (can we compel you to accept it?), the word ‘a is often used for “what, how, why, whether”. Nulzimu means “to drive or urge on forcibly”, the word kumuu is actually kum, which means “your”. The origin of Nulzimu is ‘ilzaam, which has come out from lazama. Some more words like luzuum, laazim, lawaazim etc. have been derived from the same origin also. Luzuum means “to cling to, to follow someone every time”. ‘Ilzaam means “to accuse someone, to compel for accepting”.

Messenger Noah (peace be upon him) said to his folk! Allah Almighty has shown me the Right Path and appointed me a Messenger of Him mercifully; so that I should guide you also unto the Right Path. I admit that I do not possess apparent pomp and show, wealth and property etc. but greatness cannot be acquired by these things. It can accrue with correctness of sense and good manners. Allah Almighty has bestowed upon me these both things. If you are unable to see them then what is its treatment? You are deprived of the both, moreover, you run away from them. How can we compel those people to cause to understand; who cannot bethink at their own?

27.  Then the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved, said: We see thee but a mortal like us, and we see not that any follow thee save the most abject among us, at first thought and we behold in you no excellence over us- nay, we deem you liars.

27.  Faqaalal-Mala-’ulla-ziina  kafaruu  min-  qaw-mihii  maa  naraaka  ‘illaa  basha-ram-misla-naa  wa  maa  naraa-kat-taba-‘a-ka  ‘illal-laziina  hum  ‘araazi-lunaa  baadi-yar-ra’-y.  Wa  maa  naraa  lakum  ‘alay-naa  min-  fazlim-  bal  nazun-nukum  kaazi-biin.

Commentary

‘Araazi-lunaa – (the most abject among us), this word is plural of ‘arzala, which has been derived from the word razala. Razala means “to be from a low caste, to be inferior”. From the same; the word razaalat has come out. Raziil is the person who is “a mean fellow, a vagabond, a low caste”. Here it aims: such people who earn by means of lowly professions, for example; sweepers etc.

It is commanded that the folk of Messenger Noah (peace be upon him) did not give any importance to His sayings. They said: While you are also a man like us, then why should we obey your command? Moreover, those people who have believed in You, they too belong to a low caste. They are not from the people vested with authority, power or riches. In addition to this, your group has not shown any prominent work performed by them, from which we consider that you people are superior to us. It is clear that we deem: You all are liars. You fabricated a new method for the purpose that you were desirous of acquiring some fame and honor, but in vain.

It seems that distinction in castes, sects, tribes and nations began from those people {the folk of Noah (peace be upon him)}, and they were also founders of idol-worshipping, because they admitted that some of them were superior, and after them, they made their idols, with the passage of time, which became their gods.

25.  And We sent Noah unto his folk (and he said): Lo! I am a plain Warner unto you- 26.  That ye serve none, save Allah. Lo! I fear for you the retribution of a painful Day.

(Section 3) 25.  Wa  laqad’ar-salNaa  Nuu-han  ilaa  Qawmih.  ‘Innii  lakum  Naziirum-mubiin. 26.  ‘Allaa  ta’-buduuu  ‘il-lAllaah.  ‘Inniii  ‘akhaafu  ‘alay-kum  ‘Azaaba  Yaw-min  ‘Aliim.

Commentary

God Almighty commands: We sent Noah (peace be upon him) unto his nation as a Messenger, so that he (peace be upon him) should cause to hear them Our Message. Noah (peace be upon him) said to his people: I have come to frighten you in clear words, because you have been going astray, and its result will be not good for you. Behold! You should give up adoring idols. Turn your attention to Allah Almighty. Believe in it that only He is your Worshipped. You should neither prostrate before any other and nor sing a song of any person’s praise save Him. Praise and thank Allah Almighty only. Neither these idols and nor those persons, whose faces’ idols you fabricated, have given you anything. Everything which you possess is given by Allah Almighty, so every time, you should worship, praise and thank Him only. I warn you that if you did not do so; then you should wait for a terrible Day, in which your all deeds will be examined. And you would have to be seized in a painful doom, retribution of adoring the idols and turning away from Allah Almighty.

The people to whom Messenger Noah (peace be upon him) was causing to understand, they had to use their sense and think that verily; He (peace be upon him) was speaking the truth. But their sense led them to a wrong path, which was not straightened.
