Meanings of “the Pride”
Suratun-Nahl - (The Bee) - 16
‘A-‘uu-zu
Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)
Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)
In the previous lesson, the arrogance (Takabbar)
has been condemned strongly. It prevents the mankind from doing good works.
Moreover, Allah Almighty does not like the proud person. Satan did not bow
before Adam (peace be upon him), whereas it was commanded to him by Allah
Almighty that he should prostrate. It was the only reason that he considered
himself superior to Adam (peace be upon him). It is called pride. Due to
haughtiness, Satan disobeyed the Command of Allah Almighty and was determined
as “Outcast and Accursed” for ever.
It has also been mentioned in the verse that the
pride arises into the mankind when he does not believe in the Hereafter.
Disbelief in the Day of Resurrection means that “any wrongdoer will not be
punished whether he commits any evil”. If this thought is fixed in the heart,
then its consequence would be that such person would consider himself most
superior and say: I am most powerful, so I should do what I can before death.
On this account, he begins to give importance to
his strength and powers. He considers that other all people are nothing before
him. If someone desires to advise him, he becomes ready to disgrace him. Such
kind of person cannot believe in Allah Almighty, because if he would believe
then he would have to be bound of His Commandment. Whereas he does not want to
abide by the instructions from anyone else save to follow own desires.
But it is understood from the above mentioned
verse, as well as from other verses, narratives and Sayings (‘Ahaadith)
also that every pride is not censured. But there is such a pride, which is
called “self restraining”. The word “takabbar” has been derived from kibr.
Kibr means “grandeur, pride, greatness”. Which pride keeps off any
person from accepting the Truth and the Just, and it excites to deprive the
rights of the people, that pride is the worst and it is against the mankind’s
worthy of dignity in all respect.
But that pride which prevents a person from evils
and disgraceful works, and forbids him from bowing before oppressors and
wrongdoers, that is plaudit-able. We name such pride as “self-restraining, civility
and self-respect etc.” and some people say that it is selfishness because the
word “pride” is usually used in bad meanings.
